Details
──────────────────
Overview
Begin your private shore excursion with a convenient pickup directly from Yatsushiro Port. Travel in the comfort of your own private vehicle. Unlike a large group tour, there is no need to keep pace with other travelers, allowing you to enjoy each destination comfortably and at your own pace.
Travel to Kumamoto City and begin at Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s most impressive historic castles. Originally completed in the early 17th century under the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa, the castle is renowned for its massive stone walls and striking black-and-white exterior. Explore the castle grounds and main keep while learning about its long history and the ongoing restoration following the Kumamoto earthquakes.
Continue to Sakuranobaba Johsaien, located beside Kumamoto Castle. Enjoy free time at Sakuranokoji, where restaurants and shops offer Kumamoto specialties, local snacks, and souvenirs. The Kumamoto Castle Museum Wakuwakuza is also located here, although it is currently temporarily closed following the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake and is scheduled to reopen in December 2026.
Next, visit Suizenji Jojuen Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden created by the Hosokawa family in the early Edo period. Stroll around its spring-fed pond and beautifully landscaped grounds, including a miniature representation of Mount Fuji and scenery inspired by the historic Tokaido route.
After discovering Kumamoto’s castle history, local culture, and traditional garden scenery, return comfortably to Yatsushiro Port in time for your ship’s departure.
