Overview

Begin your private shore excursion with a convenient pickup directly from Yatsushiro Port. Travel in the comfort of your own private vehicle. Unlike a large group tour, there is no need to keep pace with other travelers, allowing you to enjoy each destination comfortably and at your own pace.

Travel to Hitoyoshi, a historic castle town surrounded by the mountains of southern Kumamoto. Begin at Aoi Aso Shrine, one of Hitoyoshi’s most important cultural landmarks. Its five main shrine buildings are designated National Treasures of Japan and showcase distinctive architecture dating from the early Edo period.

Continue to Kajiyamachi Street, a historic street that developed as part of the former castle town. The area was traditionally home to craftsmen who served the ruling Sagara clan, and today retains elements of its historic streetscape.

Next, visit the ruins of Hitoyoshi Castle, the former stronghold of the Sagara family, who ruled the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region for centuries. Explore the remaining stone walls and castle grounds while learning about the history of this important castle town. Some areas may be restricted due to ongoing restoration work following damage from the 2020 heavy rains.

If time permits, visit Shohinken Garden after returning to Yatsushiro. This historic garden and former residence is closely associated with the Matsui family, who governed Yatsushiro during the Edo period.

After exploring the history and traditional atmosphere of Hitoyoshi, return comfortably to Yatsushiro Port with the itinerary planned to leave a comfortable margin before your scheduled boarding time.
